Decoding and Recoding

I learned that "decoding" involves getting to the meaning. "Recoding" is identifying words. Recoding consists of changing from one code to another. Freeman and Freeman state, "word identification involves recoding the marks on the paper into words readers already know in their oral vocabulary and then combining the meaning of individual words to get at the meaning of the text."
