Phonetics, Phonology, and Phonemes!

Chapter 3

Phonetics- “the study of sounds across languages”(p.53).

Phonology-“the study of the sounds used by speakers of a particular language” (p.53).

Phoneme- “ a sound that makes a difference in meaning in a language” (p. 54).

· Phonemes are indicated by slash marks / /.

· Phonemes are perceptual not physical.

“Each phoneme can be described by its place and manner of articulation and whether or not it is voiced” (p 54).
